In both of my works in this exhibition, I touch upon phenomena connected to the current state of the earth and the climate crisis, and the fact that the crisis is universal. We carry the same concerns, no matter where we reside, Sweden or Japan.
The piece Axis describes a graph of the Earth’s average temperature over the past 100 years. By visualizing the increase in temperature in physical form and on a large scale, I want to make it more tangible and possible to understand. The surface of the steel wire is covered with clay, i.e. earth, which, just like the earth itself, dries and cracks from air and heat.
The work Drift is a comment on how the ice is melting in the Arctic. Porcelain shards that resemble ice gradually slide apart. The title describes the movement of the ice as it drifts and disperses. I have also taken an interest in the materials’ inherent transparency / light transmittance (how they let light through), and how hard materials meet soft ones.
